Callan

I knew things had gone sideways the moment I came to, fully dressed, in my bed. Groaning, I pushed myself up as the room spun.

Zane had tried to warn me about drinking too much, we had a game tomorrow. He was going to be hell to live with.

“Are you finally conscious?” Zane crossed his arms. His lip turned up in unconcealed disgust. I rolled my eyes. He’d been on my case about Hallie all fucking week. I wished I’d never admitted to our bathroom shenanigans. Zane Donovan was the best dude, honestly, even if a little sappy sometimes.

One hook-up didn’t make Hallie my soulmate.

Liar.

My subconscious could fuck all the way off, right along with my best friend.

“I’m a little light on the details. What the hell happened tonight?”

“Last night,” Zane corrected, staring me down.

It was morning already? Jesus H. “Fine, last night. How much did you let me drink?” That was mostly a joke. We both knew there was no setting a limit for me when I was in a mood, and holy hell, had I been in a mood.

The test. Shit. I’d invited Yasmine like a dick. I glanced around the room, moving as little as possible. No telltale sign that she’d come back home with me, at least this time.

“Morgan, Hallie, and their friends showed up. Along with Morgan’s boyfriend,” Zane said darkly.

I dropped my head into my hands.

“Dude, that’s not even the worst part. You clocked some asshole on the jaw. He was hitting on Hallie and wouldn’t back-off. So summing up, you fucked things up with both Hallie and Yasmine, and you could face disciplinary action from the team if the ass-hat wants to push things.”

I fell back on my bed, staring up at the ceiling. Go big or go home, I guess.

“Look Callan, I get it. We both have goals, my man. There’s nothing that says you have to do it alone, though. Do you expect Olivia to sacrifice a shot at love because she’s in med school?” Zane asked, hitting me with the big guns. He knew Olivia was my kryptonite.

Hell, I could still remember being four years old and Dad sitting me down on the couch next to Mom. I’d stretched my little arms out, and she’d carefully placed the tiny bundle of pink blankets into them and I’d known, even then, that I’d do damn near anything to make that baby smile. Olivia wasn’t a baby anymore, but if some man made her happy, I’d never begrudge her that, not even if it made her path harder.

Zane stepped into my line of sight, raising an eyebrow. Shit, he wanted an actual answer.

“Nah, man. Of course not. But this is diff—”

“Don’t. Don’t say ‘this is different’. It’s not fucking different. You’re just up to your neck in your own bullshit and would rather throw up your hands than admit that Hallie could have been something real. Nut up and fix this,” Zane said. He shook his head and, with one last reproachful look, he left me alone with my thoughts.
